Being Savvy: Activities, things to do with your preschoolers, toddlers and kids in East Bay, CA

Vegetable education delivered to your door

Everyone says that engaging your kids in the cooking process will promote better eating habits.  And, my kid LOVES receiving a package in the mail.  So, why not put these two events together and subscribe to a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture means that we, the community, help fund the farm - paying for seeds, maintenance, and labor - and the farm provides us with a small share of it's harvest.

There are CSAs all over the country-- more than 1,500, in fact.  In California, we are lucky to have lots of warm weather in which so many delicious foods can grow.  But anyone can join their local CSA.

Sign up and pay a weekly or monthly fee.  A box will be delivered to your door (or maybe you'll pick it up at your farmer's market) packed with veggies and fruits.  It's up to you to decide what to do with them, but surely your preschooler will be extremely interested in helping you unpack the box.  My son liked to line up everything across our kitchen counter - sometimes 30 pieces of produce!

A mom from my preschool vouches for Riverdog Farm:

They are an organic farm based in the nearby Capay Valley.  Their produce is fantastic and very reasonably priced.  A CSA box costs $16 per week and will definitely fill up the produce drawers in the refrigerator.  It's a great value for high quality organic produce.
