How sunwise are you?
As the warm sunny days give way to cold sunny rainy days, it might seem like an odd time to talk about sun protection. But I'm a little obsessed so it never really goes out of season.
I have red hair -- and zero natural sun protection. My one-year old has red hair and very little of it, so he's always splattered with sunscreen and frequently sporting a hat.
Holden, at age 3, cannot be bothered with hats anymore. Luckily, he has a good head of hair... so I can suggest if anyone else is wrestling a hat on a kid who just plans to chuck it that you could pretend its really hay or mud like an elephant to seem more appealing.
Jenny from Being Savvy San Diego shared her secret for getting kids to care about sunburn and protection. Check out the sunwise animals and explain the sun protection facts of life to your curious preschooler next time you're at Oakland Zoo together. Wallow in mud or paint circles under your eyes as needed.
[note: Oakland Zoo isn't officially a participating zoo in the sunwise program but I don't see why you can't play anyway.]
